Friendship, Healing and a Good Book
Every so often I stumble across a book series that feels like settling into a comfortable chair with a warm cup of tea. Ellery Adams' A Secret, Book & Scone Society series is one of those discoveries.
Set in the charming mountain town of Miracle Springs, North Carolina, the series centers around four women who each carry wounds from their past. Rather than allowing those hurts to isolate them, they form an unlikely friendship built on trust, support, and understanding. Together they become known as the Secret, Book & Scone Society. At the heart of the story is Nora Pennington, owner of Miracle Books. Nora has a gift for matching people with just the right book at just the right time. Her bookstore becomes more than a place to buy novels, it becomes a refuge for people searching for hope, healing, and a fresh start.
Joining Nora are Hester Winthrop, a baker known for her comforting scones; Estella Sadler, the owner of the local salon and spa; and June Dixon, a quiet and compassionate caregiver. Each woman has a story marked by loss, regret, or hardship, yet their friendship becomes a reminder that our past does not have to define our future.
While each book includes a mystery to solve, I found that the real story lies in the relationships. The mysteries provide the framework, but the heart of the series is found in themes of friendship, forgiveness, second chances, and personal healing. It is a cozy mystery series, but it is also a story about broken people learning to trust again.
Perhaps that is why these books resonate with so many readers. They remind us that we all carry secrets, scars, and struggles that others may never see. Yet healing often begins when we find people willing to walk alongside us. In a world that can sometimes feel divided and hurried, there is something refreshing about a story that celebrates community, kindness, books, and the simple comfort of being known.
In my life, I always longed for a tight-knit group of friends, sisters in Christ, with whom I could share life and celebrate our love of Jesus. For several months, I thought the circle that was forming, fell apart but God knows best. What was a circle of three, was salvaged just a few weeks ago and there were two. Then suddenly, it became three again with a new face in the midst and from that a tiny Bible study is beginning to take root. Just yesterday, another woman joined the group and now there are four of us, seeking God, through the study of His Word. I’m so grateful to be part of that and equally excited to see what God will do in our lives as we move forward.
It’s incredible when God sees me, and my love of a book series based on close friendships and works that out in my life.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries with depth, memorable characters, and a strong sense of place, the Secret, Book & Scone Society series may be worth adding to your reading list.
Peace,
B
