Reflections

In an earlier blog entry, I wrote about photographing my grand-niece’s wedding. After three weeks and many hours of editing , the wedding photos are finished and delivered. Her reaction made every bit of the exhaustion and the pain I put my body through that day worthwhile.

Would I do it again?

No. Absolutely not. A lot went wrong that day. My strobe died and the venue was dark. I’m used to a photography timeline, but this wedding didn’t hold to that. I promised myself that I’d “roll” with whatever happened and make the best of it. I definitely would have loved to have more time for photos with the bride and groom. We had 25 minutes but we made it work. In the end, all I care about is that they had a great time during their wedding and they’re officially Mr. and Mrs.

When friends or family get engaged and begin planning their wedding budget, I always advise them to book their venue, caterer, and photographer first because those are the big-ticket items. Find a photographer whose style you love, set up a meeting, and make sure you feel comfortable with them. They’re going to be with you throughout the day, capturing all the moments that matter most.

Wedding days are a whirlwind of activity and emotion. When the photographer delivers your images, the entire day comes rushing back, and those memories stay with you through the photographs.

Yes, there are color photos, but I decided to share only black-and-white images on the blog because I happen to love black-and-white photography. It was my first love when I picked up a camera nearly thirty years ago, and I’ve been considering using black and white throughout the site for the documentary feel it evokes.

We’ll see.

This is the last wedding I’ll photograph, and it’s bittersweet. I’ve watched my girl grow up, and it feels like only yesterday that she graced us with her presence when she arrived nearly twenty-five years ago. In just a few weeks, we’ll celebrate her twenty-fifth birthday.

She has accomplished so much in the past couple of year, from graduating nursing school and becoming an RN to marrying the love of her life. It has been incredible to witness and document.

It’s also a reminder of just how quickly life passes. Here she is beginning a new chapter with her husband while I’m embracing my senior years. It’s hard to write that because, honestly, I don’t feel ready to sign up for Medicare. Yet here I am, rocking it.

Again, bittersweet.

I remember being her age, married 18 months and holding my first son. Then, in what feels like the blink of an eye, my children are grown, and even the grands are grown.

I’m still not quite sure how I feel about all of it.

Peace,
B
