We Were The Lucky Ones | Book Review

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

We Were the Lucky Ones is a book I grabbed when it went on sale for $7.99 in Kindle format. After my Amazon rewards it was $3.72. I’m a fan of historical fiction and biography and this book got outstanding reviews so I bought it.

The novel is about a Polish, Jewish family during WWII and takes you on a journey of what they endured and survived. The author, Georgia Hunter wasn’t aware that her family history included the Holocaust but after learning the story of her grandfather after he passed, she felt the urge to write a book documenting it all.

What I Loved

  • The writing style, and the characters in the story.

What Didn’t Work For Me

  • There are so many characters to keep track of in this book. It can get a bit confusing.

  • Jumping from one character or set of characters to the next just when I wanted more of that couple’s story or person’s story. I never felt fully immersed in it.

Would I Recommend It?

If you’re a fan of this period of time, or enjoy reading Jewish cultural stories, or a fan of historical novels… then yes, I would recommend the book.

The things that didn’t work for me are my issues. I love deep character development and getting to know them. With so many members of family to write about, I can understand why she chose the format. It just didn’t work well for me. The story was interesting enough to push through the things that bothered me because I truly wanted to know the outcome.

I’ve read others that manage to weave the lives of the characters together a bit better, in my humble opinion, like All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. That book left its mark on my heart and there are a great many others that did the same.

While this story doesn’t make my favorites list, I’m happy that I got the chance to read about Georgia Hunter’s family and I may add her other book, One Good Thing, published in 2025 to my “To Be Read” list.

Happy reading,
B
